On the left, we have blondie, not him. The SGT PEPPER Wannabe ? Maybe, but I dont think so. The guy stuck in the tree in the sweater? Not!

That must be John on the right, but he……….is………..holding……….a……….trumpet. I just dont know. If only he was wearing flannel,

that would be a give away.

And the artwork, CAN ANYONE SEE “REVIVAL”? Must of been a color blind artist. What do you think? Looks like one of those tests they gave in Little Miss Sunshine.

And now for the back cover. Can you find the hidden band member? And yes, that confirms it, the artist is colorblind, or maybe just blind.

So after reading that and nearly going blind, it says something about all the great bands from San Francisco, the Liverpool of America.

How they are so good because they have plenty of places to hone their skills, in The Major Leagues(Baseball analogy) , like The Fillmore, The Avalon, and The Carousel. Or the smaller clubs, The Matrix, The New Orleans House, and my favorite, The Poppycock. There is some really good stuff here, send me $50 bucks and I will type it ALL up and post it.

As a 2 yr old, it appears I was hooked from the beginning and here’s the proof! Maybe I was playing THIS,

THE BEATLES!

MEET THE BEATLES to be exact. Released in Jan 1964, but recorded in 1963, my year of birth. A little research indicates that MEET THE BEATLES is the US release of the UK version of WITH THE BEATLES.  It clocks in at an astounding 26:43 minutes. That’s about half a YES song. What I’m baffled about is the cover, who can get excited about that cover?  It could be MEET THE BEATLES, the SINISTER KIDS NEXT DOOR! And why is RINGO always treated like a third(or fourth) wheel. He looks so sad in the corner all alone! And what about that FIFTH BEATLE, ANTON CHIGURH. What’s he up to these days?

I much prefer this picture below, found on the back cover of the album I hold in my hands, oops, almost said LP, but 26 minutes is NOT an LP. For you newbies, LP means LONG PLAYING record.  Cool picture, but Im reading the notes and to  get the kids really excited, they mention that “They wear “pudding basin” haircuts that date back to ancient England”.  NOW that’s fresh and hip! Continuing on, Capitol Records states they work piano, Hammond organ, tambourine, mouth organ,………mouth organ?, Arabian bongoes and claves into their act.  I know teenagers today would get really excited about these cool instruments and couldnt wait to jam to bongoes and claves! But teenagers in the 60′s couldnt be that hip, could they?

Now the album, the cover is really not the way a new band should be promoted, unless it’s some form of DEATH METAL. Take for instance,  The MONKEES. Isn’t that much more pleasant? That is how you promote a pop band in the 60s.

I never really got into the Beatles as a kid, but gradually acquired a taste for Beatles. I think I even asked myself, who is John Lennon?, this the day after he was murdered! BLASPHEMY, I know. I do miss him though.  John Lennon shows his stuff on this record, and displays a keen knack for the blues, heard on “Little Child”, my favorite cut on this record, clocking in at 1 minute and 46 seconds.  Wait, I dont get it, the best song on here and it ends in less than 2 minutes?  My favorite Beatles book, The COMPLETE BEATLES DISCOGRAPHY, claims that Johns harmonica is very  derivative of Cyril Davies, a legendary harmonica player from the 50′s and 60′s. What about the rest, the filler as they call it.  “I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND”, “I SAW HER STANDING THERE”, wooooo and “ALL MY LOVING.”  Paul, your a genius!

Why is a piece of black vinyl in a 12″ cardboard box so mysterious to some, like an old friend to others, and a source of curiosity to a new generation of music lovers? Is it the art, which your eyes can see, your hands can touch and your mind can read as you absorb the music within? Or the mystery presented by a piece of plastic which meets the sharp point of a needle, and reproduces such a beautiful aural experience.

I can put thousands of songs in a little box smaller than a pack of cig’s, and carry it with me anywhere I go, to the bathroom, in an airplane or to bed. You CAN’T DO THAT with a record! Well, you can, but you can’t listen to it at the same time. With all the limitations and equipment required, is it still alive. Long gone are the musical boxes, the 8-track tape, even the 45. Still, the LP will not die! It still maintains life, as an icon maybe, and is revered by many, young and old alike!

So, with my trusty and worn out Album Cover AlbumAlbum Cover Album, a collection of great album cover art as my guide,  I’m going to attempt to listen to some of the VINYL versions of the artists represented within the pages, and rediscover the allure of black vinyl. I don’t expect to listen to every single piece in here, but will relisten to some old favorites or discover some music from the past. Some of these I already own, and others I will seek out in my local vinyl store, goodwill or flea market.

Stay tuned, as I venture forth and take you on a journey that will make its way on these pages with my personal thoughts of the music, the art, and the experience of pulling out a shiny piece of black plastic, placing it on a round table, and setting the needle in the groove!

Question: Does how we listen to music affect the listening experience? Is the art of the album really that important?
